The municipality of Gigante, Huila sits in the center east of the department and lies between the Magdalena River and Matambo Hill. Gigante is rich in natural forest and rivers and streams but has been affected in more recent years by improper land use.
This coffee comes from the El Desarollo Association that has 220 members from the western slopes of the Eastern Andes. They come from 41 villages spread over this area. There are 1669 men and 51 women whose ages range from 25 - 78 years old. These families earn their living from famring coffee and growing other small crops on their land to feed themselves and sell as well. The varietals planted on the farms are mainly caturra and colombia and the soil is volcanic. Annually this are receives between 1200-1500 masl of rain.
Coffee is harvested in the main crop April - June or in the fly crop September - November. All the coffee is a traditional washed coffee that is pulped, fermented and then washed before being dried on small patios or African beds with parabolic tents.
