Counting our footprints and we made it one step closer: Kaffa joins the Science Based Targets initiative!

We’re excited to announce that Kaffa has officially joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)! This marks another milestone in our journey towards creating a more sustainable future for our business and the planet.

What is the Science Based Targets initiative?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) provides companies with a clearly defined pathway to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Specifically, it ensures that companies commit to targets that are consistent with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels.

By joining the initiative, Kaffa is assuring that the reporting and carbon inventory are verified by a globally recognized standard in climate responsibility. The main objective is to track and reduce Kaffa’s impact and ensure alignment with global efforts to mitigate climate change.

Target:

“Kaffa Roastery Oy commits to maintain zero scope 1 emissions through 2030. Kaffa Roastery Oy also commits to reduce absolute scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2023 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions.”

What does this mean for Kaffa?

The main purpose for joining the SBTi is simple: to reduce our environmental impact in a measurable, transparent way. By conducting a carbon inventory and following the GHG protocol, we can assess where we stand today and build a strategy to minimise our emissions in the future.

We’ve already made significant progress, such as establishing the Kaffa Handshake and securing several certifications (RFA, Luomu) as well as opting for green energy solutions and circular initiatives that promote responsible practices. However, there is always room for improvement - specifically when it comes to calculating and analysing the precise figures behind our efforts. We now have a strong framework to accurately report our emissions, which we’ll share in an annual GHG report.

Why we joined:

Kaffa has always prioritised sustainability, and by joining the SBTi, we can further our commitment to transparency and accountability. We’re excited to join the 149 companies in Finland - 51 of which are small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) like us! We are also joining the few specialised coffee producers globally that have set targets with the SBTi.

This global movement is beneficial to everyone as more and more data becomes accessible, making it easier to collectively improve the accuracy of environmental footprints in the future.

Another key driver for our decision to join was our commitment to B2B partners and their growing emphasis on climate action. Some of our partners have been pushing for third-party validation to strengthen our sustainability claims, and with SBTi, we can provide that.

Where are we now, and what’s next?

We’ve already reached zero co2e emissions in scope 1 & 2 (market-based) through our commitment to renewable energy. On top of that, we are continuously measuring and looking into how to reduce scope 3 emissions starting from upstream categories.

The first step to making meaningful reductions is knowing exactly where we stand!

Stay tuned for updates on our progress towards 2030 goals!
